Butler College

Butler College (Rendering)

Project Description

Part of the Residential College construction program, this new 288 bed complex will be built on the site of the former Butler dorms. This project will comprise a group of two to four story buildings that complement the historic campus with contemporary architecture. The new layout will enhance connectivity with the existing campus by strengthening and connecting walkways and vistas.
Many sustainability features have been incorporated in the design. Some of the new dorms will feature environmentally friendly "green roofs,” where the structure is covered with a waterproofing membrane topped by soil and vegetation. This has the potential to reduce heating and cooling loads and decrease stormwater runoff. Natural light will help brighten nearly all the interior spaces and high-efficiency plumbing fixtures will help with water consumption. The buildings are designed to use 30% less energy than what would be expected under current building codes.

Sustainability Features

  • High efficiency window glazing used throughout project.
  • Extensive (shallow-soil) "green" roof will be tested on 50% of roof area, with white ballasted roof on remaining roof area.
  • Academic study (with extensive instrumentation) of green roof vs. conventional system will be applied to the project, with funding from the High Meadows Foundation.
  • High efficiency valence system will be used with individual room controls to prevent overheating in living areas.
  • Rainwater will be captured and reused for irrigation of outdoor amphitheater.
