Dear Prospective Resident:
To assist you with completing your housing application we created this web-page. It briefly describes the Faculty and Staff Housing Program. The application is designed to provide as much relevant information as possible so that we can offer you housing that most nearly suits your needs. Please review these materials thoroughly and complete the application form as best as you can.
Faculty and Staff Housing is allocated as equitably as feasible. However it is not possible to house everyone, or even to always assign everyone the type of accommodations requested. Past experience has shown us that we are usually able to offer applicants either their first or second preference for housing. Every application is given consideration based upon the Rental Housing Eligibility Policy which gives the highest priority to teaching faculty, senior research staff, and senior administrative staff, then progresses through each subsequent category as availability allows.
Faculty and Staff Housing allocation is a process which begins early in the calendar year when we (Faculty and Staff Housing Office), request "housing requirements" from the University departments and programs. That means that we ask departments and programs to tell us who will be coming to Princeton so we can provide housing information directly to the incoming individuals. At the same time, we are gathering information from current residents in University housing concerning their renewal and vacate plans. Although all University leases end on June 30th, many of our residents require lease extensions into the summer months. All of this information is coordinated in the spring and we are usually in a position to begin making specific offers of rental housing beginning in June and continuing through the month of July, sometimes later.
There is a limited supply of Furnished Apartments available for visiting personnel only. All furnished apartments are completely equipped with the exception of bed linen, blankets and towels. Small personal appliances (TV's, telephones etc.), are provided. These units are allocated to visiting faculty first (those with teaching responsibilities), then to other visitors if units are available. The furnished stock is comprised of two, three and four bedroom units in the Hibben/Magie complex and a small number of one and two bedroom units at the Stanworth Complex. Very few furnished units exist elsewhere. The minimum rental period is three months with rare exception. Because of the limited supply, high demand and high turnover, furnished apartment leases cannot be modified within or beyond the period specified.
If you are offered a University rental unit, please notify us of your decision as soon as possible. Carefully weigh whether or not the unit will truly meet your housing needs since the University does not allow changes in housing units within a three year period. Of course, exceptional circumstances are considered on an individual basis.
We hope we have provided a brief yet useful overview of the Faculty and Staff Housing Program. Please do not hesitate to contact us if you have further questions.
