Annual Campus Steam Shutdown
Each year Facilities conducts a plant steam system shutdown to safely perform new building steam pipe connections, some energy saving projects, and various system wide preventative and corrective maintenance.
This year, the boilers will be shutdown on Tuesday, June 9, 2009 from 5 a.m. to approximately 9 p.m., approximately 16 hours.
We chose this shutdown date to reduce the impact on campus customers. The steam shutdown will affect all buildings on the main campus, as well as Forbes College, McCarter Theater, 1-14 West College Road Apartments, Hibben and Magie Apartments, and the Graduate School.
In the summer, steam is used for domestic hot water, some types of clothes dryers, laboratory autoclaves, commercial kitchens, and for space re-heat after the air has been dehumidified by the cooling coils.
