Outside Course Approval
What to do if you want to take a course
Order a summer session catalog from a four-year accredited college or university you want to attend, or find the relevant material on the web. (Community colleges won't work). We do NOT accept distance learning courses. Summer classes taken as part of an official Princeton University program (such as Princeton in Beijing) do not require transfer credit approval.
Find a course that is the equivalent of something offered at Princeton- i.e., no buisness school, journalism, communications, or basket-weaving courses. It has to be at least four weeks long, meet for a minimum of thirty hours, and have real assignments, papers, and/or exams. A lab science course has to have at least 30 hours of lab in addition to the class hours. Transfer credit will be granted only if you earn a grade of "C" or higher. A "C-" is not acceptable. Courses cannot be taken on a pass/fail basis.
You can download the necesary course approval form or stop by the College Office to pick up a copy. The distribution requirements have changed so there are two different forms: Class of 2015 & 2016 course approval form and the Class of 2013 & 2014 course approval form. Please make sure you complete the form for your class year.
Read the instructions on the form very carefully. Use a separate form for each course you want approved, unless they are in sequence (e.g. CHM 201-202). Fill out Step One of the form. Be sure to check the appropriate spaces on the form concerning the purpose for which you are taking the course.
Take the course form and the catalog or printout from the web to the Departmental Representative in the appriopriate department (e.g. the math dep rep for a math course). He or she will decide whether the course can be approved. If the course is to be used as a requirement for another department, for a certificate, or for some other program or purpose, make sure the form is also signed by the representative of those departments, certificates for programs. BSE students must also ge the approval of the Associate Dean of Engineering, Peter Bogucki.
Bring the signed form, along with a xeroxed copy of the course description and hours and the summer session schedule stating the first and last day of class, back to the Forbes College office for final approval by Dr. Caddeau or Dean Hodgson. All courses must be submitted by Dean's Date. The sooner you submit the necessary materials the better. You must have approval to take the course BEFORE the first class meeting in order to be eligible for Princeton University transfer credit.
Once you complete the course, request that an official transcript be sent to the appropriate Princeton Office. Credit for non-Princeton courses will be processed upon receipt of an official transcript.
