"La Traviata" at the Metropolitan Opera Tickets for the Opera will be sold by the FCC. Watch your email for announcements. This is a shared trip with all six colleges. The bus will leave from Baker Rink at 5:30 p.m.(note: this is one half-hour later then our normal departure). Baker Rink Parking Lot · 5:30 p.m.–11:30 p.m. Dinner with Professor Christiane Fellbaum Join us for a dinner discussion with Professor Christiane Fellbaum on "Understanding Language: Man vs. Machine". Human beings learn, understand and produce language fast and effortlessly. Much of our highly complex linguistic behavior can be explained with rules as well as with statistical properties of language. But we are not (yet) doing very well when we try to "teach" computers to use language for applications like question answering (IBM's "Watson"), machine translation (Google translate), and drawing inferences from text. What is so difficult about language and why? I'll focus on what is arguably the most challenging aspect of language--meaning--and provide examples of the state of the art and current approaches to breaking the man-machine language barrier. Please have your meal and be seated in the small dining room by 6:00 p.m. Forbes Special Dining Room (SDR) · 6:00 p.m.– 7:00 p.m. |
