This portrait of John Witherspoon, Princeton’s sixth
president, was engraved in 1785. Though in truth possessing the
prominent nose and bushy eyebrows caricatured here, his students and contemporaries
described him as an admirable man of enormous presence who was an excellent
preacher and teacher. Witherspoon is quoted on the walls of the
Frist Campus Center.
