Cheryl de la Rey

Cheryl de la Rey has been the vice-chancellor and principal of the University of Pretoria since 2009. Her previous positions include chief executive officer of the Council on Higher Education, deputy vice chancellor at the University of Cape Town, and executive director at the National Research Foundation. A psychologist by training, she is a member of a number of national and international boards and committees such as the Human Resource Development Council of South Africa, the Council of the Association of Commonwealth Universities, and the International Council for Science’s Scientific Planning and Review Committee. She also is the African co-chairperson of the Australia-Africa Universities Network. Shortly after taking her position at Pretoria, she undertook a strategic planning process that looked at questions of growth, identity, diversity, and sustainability for this university of some 50,000 students.
