Helga Nowotny is a founding member of the European Research Council and served as its president from 2010 to 2013. In January 2014, she was appointed chair of the ERA Council Forum Austria, which is charged with advising the Austrian minister responsible for science and research at the interface of European and national research policy. She was a faculty member at the University of Vienna before joining ETH Zurich, where she is a professor emerita of social studies of science. Her many awards include the J. D. Bernal Prize for Distinguished Contribution to the Field from the Society for Social Studies of Science and an honorary doctorate from the Weizmann Institute of Science. She is a member of the governing board of Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München. Her books include Insatiable Curiosity: Innovation in a Fragile Future, which explores the often unexpected intertwining of science, technology, and society.
