COPYRIGHT BASICS

The Office of Legal Council provides a website which outlines copyright law, fair use, permission and liability. This can be found at: Copyright Infringement Basics.

  • The Geosciences Library will serve as our first contact when preparing course packets or a class syllabus which requires use of copyrighted material. If you are assigning this task to your Faculty Assistant, they are instructed to work with the library to ensure that we are in compliance with university policies and procedures regarding copyright.
  • Ample time should be allotted for the preparation of the course packet. We are relying on the services of the library and at times there can be a waiting period. Xeroxing of material protected by copyright law is not permitted i.e., a book cannot be copied one chapter per week as this is a clear violation of the law.
  • Clayton Marsh of the Office of General Counsel will be working with Dean David Dobkin to provide a directive to faculty outlining compliance and copyright infringement. He indicated that this should be available soon.
