The President and Council of the Geological Society of India conveyed to Prof. Gerta Keller and her co-authors that the Radhakrishna prize has been awarded to them for the best paper published in their journal for the year 2011. The paper chosen for this prize “Deccan Volcanism Linked to the Cretaceous – Tertiary Boundary Mass Extinction : New Evidence from ONGC Wells in the Krishna – Godhavari Basin,” is available for viewing on Keller’s website. It is mentioned that the awarded paper should have wide appeal and open up new avenues of research in the study of Earth Sciences.

The paper reads that a scientific challenge is to assess the role of Deccan volcanism in the Cretaceous-Tertiary boundary (KTB) mass extinction. The report goes on to discuss the stratigraphy and biologic effects of Deccan volcanism in eleven deep wells in India.

Co-author Dr. B.C. Jaiprakash will accept the award on behalf of Keller and co-authors at the Annual Convention of the Geological Society of India, scheduled to be held at the The Crown Hotel, Nayapalli, Bhubaneswar – 751 015, Odisha, India, on 23rd September 2012 at 3.30 pm
