Global Health Colloquium: "Globalization, Urban Food Security & Changing Rural-Urban Relations in Sub-Saharan Africa"- Johan Pottier
Johan Pottier is Professor of Anthropology in the School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS) at the University of London. A leading figure in studies of development, humanitarian aid, and food security, Professor Pottier is the author of Re-Imagining Rwanda: Conflict, Survival and Disinformation in the Late Twentieth Century and The Anthropology of Food: The Social Dynamics of Food Security.
Professor Pottier's research has focused on Central Africa and the Great Lakes Region and, more recently, Malawi. He has published widely on local-level perceptions of food security; post-drought and post-famine recovery; international press coverage of the crisis in Rwanda; war, displacement, and ethnic reintegration; refugee perceptions of humanitarian aid; and aspects of the local-global development interface. Professor Pottier is committed to collaborative multi-disciplinary engagements with colleagues in and beyond the sites of his research and he is concerned with integrating local knowledge in development policy and practice.
