Hometown: Panama City, FL
Research interest: I am very interested in HIV-ARV distribution programs in Southern Africa; also interested in the connected treatment program of HIV and TB. I am also interested in maternal health in rural/developing areas, as well as polio eradication efforts. Even though I haven't had much exposure to learning about malaria, I may also be interested in those programs and initiatives.

Karen Schirm

Department: Molecular Biology
Certificate(s): Global Health and Health Policy
Hometown: McLean, VA
Research interest: After conducting research in the local village of Maludazwele, HaMakuya in South Africa this past summer, I am interested in the need to focus on the local community when developing global health policy and reducing disparities. In this research, my group focused on the barriers to health care access that villagers face, despite being only 8 km from the nearest clinic. I would assess such barriers further, particularly as they related to emergency trauma situations and serious illness and diseases. As a Molecular Biology major I would also be interested in focusing on the perception of major diseases, such as TB and malaria and knowledge of their transmission modes present among local communities.
