Student Bioethics Forum: "Rationing Health Care" - Peter Singer(More about event)
Sutent, a drug that slows the spread of cancer, may provide up to six extra months of life for a patient with advanced kidney cancer. How much should public health insurance pay for such a drug? Should we spend more money to save the life of a teenager than to save the life of an 85-year-old? Should we be willing to spend more money to save the life of a nondisabled person than the life of a disabled person because of differences in quality of life? In a world with scarce resources, these questions must be addressed. Yet many individuals and groups are loathe to put a price on human life in such a way.
