"Health Care Reform: Go Bold, Tread Carefully or Make It Worse?" - Leonard Schaeffer & Uwe Reinhardt
Leonard D. Schaeffer is the founding Chairman & CEO of WellPoint, the nation's largest health insurance company. WellPoint has over 34 million medical members and revenues of over $56 billion. He is currently Chairman of Surgical Care Affiliates and a Senior Advisor to TPG Capital, a private equity firm. Under Mr. Schaeffers leadership, WellPoint was selected by Fortune as Americas Most Admired Health Care Company for six consecutive years and by BusinessWeek as one of the 50 best performing public companies for three consecutive years. Mr. Schaeffer was selected by BusinessWeek as one of the Top 25 Managers of the Year and by Worth as one of the 50 Best CEOs in America.
Mr. Schaeffer's public service included appointments as Administrator of the federal Health Care Financing Administration (now CMS), Assistant Secretary for Management and Budget of the federal Department of Health, Education and Welfare, Director of the Bureau of the Budget for the state of Illinois, Chairman of the Illinois Capital Development Board, and Deputy Director of the Illinois Department of Mental Health.
Mr. Schaeffer is a graduate of Princeton University and was the Regents Lecturer at the University of California at Berkeley. He is the Judge Robert Maclay Widney Chair and Professor at the University of Southern California. Uwe Reinhardt is the James Madison Professor of Political Economy at Princeton University. Recognized as one of the nation's leading authorities on health care economics, Reinhardt has been a member of the Institute of Medicine of the National Academy of Sciences since 1978. He is a past president of the Association of Health Services Research. From 1986 to 1995 he served as a commissioner on the Physician Payment Review Committee, established in 1986 by Congress to advise it on issues related to the payment of physicians. He is a senior associate of the Judge Institute for Management of Cambridge University, UK, and a trustee of Duke University, and the Duke University Health System. Reinhardt is or was a member of numerous editorial boards, among them the Journal of Health Economics, the Milbank Memorial Quarterly, Health Affairs, the New England Journal of Medicine, and the Journal of the American Medical Association.
