Spring 2011
FRESHMAN SEMINARS
In this course we will be studying the text of Plato’s Republic (in translation), one of the cornerstones of Western philosophy, and one of the greatest pieces of writing of any age. The Republic covers a huge range of philosophical issues. Its focus is on the correct conception of justice, both the sort of justice that we find at the level of the political state, and the justice that we attribute to individuals when we think of them as being morally just agents. Plato’s analysis leads him to investigate the constitution of the ideal state and draw a parallel with the psychological constitution of human beings. Thus we find in the Republic a well-worked-out theory of human psychology and motivation.
