ABSTRACT: I will examine the social, political and cultural circumstances that generated and sustained the existence of literate bilinguals in Greek and Arabic throughout the Middle Ages, by considering concrete examples of mostly unpublished religious, philological and scientific manuscripts from Egypt, Syria/Palestine and Sicily/Southern Italy. Samples will be shown and discussed, in order to explain how not only their content, but also their format and physical appearance can help us understand the functions of bilingualism and the transmission of knowledge in bilingual circles.
Maria Mavroudi is a Post-Doctoral Teaching Fellow in Hellenic Studies, 2001-2002. She received her Ph.D. in Byzantine Studies from Harvard University. Besides Greek-Arabic manuscripts and bilingualism, her research interests include the history of magic and the apocryphal sciences in Eastern Mediterranean and the recycling of Graeco-Roman learning between Byzantium and the Islamic world.
