Summer Translation Workshop 2011
Bringing Modern Greek Literature into English
Paros, July 1-6, 2011
This seminar will bring together about ten early-career translators in a co-operative workshop setting. The goals of the workshop are to expose participants to the expertise and guidance of more experienced translators and scholars of Modern Greek literature, to encourage collaborative, creative thinking about specific projects, and also to further an interest in Modern Greek literature as a growing field for literary translation.
The workshop will be co-taught by translators Peter Constantine and Karen Emmerich, and will involve work-in-progress sessions on pre-circulated short texts as well as texts of the participants' own choosing. Both originals and translations will be circulated ahead of time to better facilitate discussion of the specific issues the texts present.
The workshop will be held at the House of Literature in the village of Lefkes on Paros. The House of Literature, run by the European Center for the Translation of Literature and the Human Sciences (EKEMEL), is a converted hotel that hosts visiting writers and translators.
