Difference, Equality, and Partnership: Reflections on Gender and Post Modern Orthodoxy
Presented by Sara and David Wolkenfeld. The different roles and opportunities for men and women in public prayer, Torah scholarship, and religious leadership are among the most prominent sources of dissonance for contemporary Orthodox Jews who cultivate a life of Torah and Mitzvot in the context of the modern egalitarian ethos. Recently, "partnership minyannim" have attempted to bridge the divide between halakhic gender roles and the desire of contemporary Jews for more equal participation in synagogue ritual. This class will explore "partnership minyannim" from the perspectives of halakhah, philosophy of law, and religious politics. RSVP to wsara@ for a complimentary Chinese food dinner.
