Alternative Spring Break with American Jewish World Service
Nine students and 1 staff member traveled to the Mayan community of Muchucuxcah, Mexico as part of the American Jewish World Service's (AJWS) Alternative Spring Break service-learning program. From March 13-20, 2011, participants volunteered with an AJWS grassroots partner, local NGO Hombre Sobre La Tierra (HST - Humankind on Earth), and explored the relationship between social justice, service and Judaism.
Participants worked side-by-side with community members on projects that helped build infrastructure and sustainability in the community. As an integral part of the experience, the group gathered each day to study social justice and international development-related topics through a Jewish lens. Participants also planned a meaningful Shabbat that highlighted the challenges and rewards of pluralistic Jewish communities.
