Jewish Muslim Trip to Spain
To express interest in future Muslim-Jewish Dialogue fellowships and activities, please contact Rabbi Julie Roth.
Dear Jewish and Muslim Students,
The Center for Jewish Life (CJL) and the Muslim Life Program in the Office of Religious Life (MLP) are excited to announce our second historic joint trip to Spain during Fall Break 2012 (October 27—November 4). Through this extraordinary experience, Jewish and Muslim students will gain invaluable insights into the unique place of medieval Spain in the development of Jewish and Islamic traditions from philosophy and law to art and architecture. During this week, Jewish and Muslim students will also have the opportunity to dialogue with each other and to think about the current state of Jewish-Muslim relations. We hope that this trip will bolster our efforts at genuine and long-lasting interfaith relations at Princeton University.
Rabbi Julie Roth and Imam Sohaib Sultan will lead the trip, facilitating learning and conversations throughout the week. We will also be joined by Professor Michael Barry of Princeton University’s Near Eastern Studies Department who will serve as our scholar-in-residence, giving us special insights into the history of Jewish-Muslim relations in medieval Spain.
We intend to take ten Jewish and ten Muslim students on this trip. Students will be chosen based on the strengths of their applications and commitment to advancing Jewish-Muslim relations on campus. The trip is subsidized with special funding from Jewish and Muslim sources, reducing the cost of the trip from $2,600 to $1,700 per student. This includes all travel and touring costs except for daily lunch. Limited scholarships are available based on financial need.
Participants are expected to bring a commitment to the spirit of the dialogue and to attend the Orientation sessions prior to the trip. Upon return to campus, participants are expected to actively participate in dialogue sessions twice per month through the end of the academic year. The dialogue sessions will be facilitated by Rabbi Julie Roth and Imam Sohaib Sultan and will be designed together with students from the trip. In addition, participants will be expected to plan one major campus program as a group and to meet once with the donors who sponsored the trip.
Deadline for applications is August 1, 2012. The deadline for freshmen to apply is extended to September 9. We look forward to your application, which you can find below. After you have filled out the application, please let us know times you are available for a phone interview at by filling out the form at http://doodle.com/39pvb8cq8ct4cz5x
Peace,
Rabbi Julie Roth & Imam Sohaib Sultan
