Frequently Asked Questions

Graduate Admission

Question:

What are the minimal scores required for the general and subject GREs as well as the TOEFL (IELTS)?

Answer:

We do not have a minimal score requirement for either, however we do recognize and encourage you to achieve high scores. We believe that while these exam scores are very important, they are only one part of the whole application being considered.

Question:

I am taking my GREs in November and the results will not be released until the end of December or early January. Is this acceptable?

Answer:

Yes. We understand that scores typically arrive a bit later than all the other materials. However, before official consideration (or an offer) can be made, ALL required materials, including general and subject GRE scores, must be in the applicant's file.

Question:

How do I know if I need to take the TOEFL (or IELTS)?

Answer:

If you are an international applicant and English is NOT the primary language spoken at your undergraduate institution then you are required to take either the TOEFL or the IELTS.

Question:

Are hard copies of information about the graduate school, admissions process, Department of History, or the Program in History of Science mailed upon request.

Answer:

Everything you need to know regarding the admissions process and the Program in History of Science can be found on the History of Science website and the Graduate School website. Hard copies are not mailed. If questions are still unanswered after review of both sites, please contact us and we will be happy to help.

Question :

How long does the writing sample have to be?

Answer :

Even though there isn’t a set length for the writing sample, we recommend that you send a well written sample between 25-50 pages of your work showing the use of primary sources.
