Teach for America

ACCESS COMMUNITY HEALTH NETWORK, Chicago, IL is the Chicago area’s largest private community health center organization.  Access operates 43 health centers and one dental health center throughout the Chicago area, servicing nearly 200,000 patients annually.  The mission of Access is to provide high quality, cost effective, safe, comprehensive primary and preventive health care in underserved Chicago communities.  All patients are welcome at Access, regardless of age, race, ethnicity, gender, language, religion, education, sexual orientation, citizenship status, physical condition or ability to pay.  The available services at Access include:  prenatal care, disabled services, behavioral health and substance abuse services, women’s health services, the Reach Out and Read program, HIV services, asthma and diabetes care, public benefits enrollment and Healthy Start.  The intern will work in the Medical Department but he or she will also have the opportunity to visit Access clinics.  The intern may be involved in projects on topics such as diabetes, asthma, depression, teen pregnancy and obesity.  He or she will also become familiar with the peer review process, which is the basis for Access’s pay-for-performance method of determining its physician’s salaries.  Occasionally, the intern will be invited to attend conferences on public health issues in Chicago with Access’s Director of Chronic Disease Programs.

Dr. Alexandra Joyner at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center is currently offering a Research Technician position in her lab. Job responsibilities will include conducting molecular biology and genetics experiments investigating adult stem cell regulation and wound healing in mouse skin.

Specific responsibilities include working with mouse tissues, histology, antibody staining, plasmid DNA preparation, running and maintaining standard laboratory equipment, ordering lab supplies, maintaining databases, and independently coordinating assignments on a day-to-day basis.

This position requires a Bachelor's Degree in a biological science. Prior research experience and practical familiarity with molecular biology, histology, database management, and general laboratory procedures are preferred. The successful candidate must be motivated, organized, show attention to detail, and have an eagerness to learn new procedures and skills. A one-year position as a physician's research and office assistant is available in the Georgetown area of Washington, DC, beginning in mid-June 2009 and lasting to the end of June 2010. The ideal applicant will be a college graduate who is personable, articulate, computer literate and interested in medicine.  The candidate will be working directly with patients and with a doctor who has been practicing general internal medicine for thirty years.  The position is full time – 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday through Friday. The candidate's primary responsibilities will involve administering all aspects of the clinical practice, ranging from performing simple medical related tasks to making appointments, setting up patients for examination, ordering supplies, billing, and doing simple accounting, as well as maintaining general cleanliness and neatness of the office.   The candidate must be prepared to learn to take blood pressures, temperatures and electrocardiograms as well as how to draw and handle blood and specimens. These are not difficult procedures, but doing them reliably is critical in order for the doctor to provide a high level of patient care.

Research (including clinical research)

Biomedical Research Career Award
The Biomedical Research Career Award (BMRCA) is a competitive, combined didactic and mentored research program offered to appropriately selected students in the Reproductive Endocrine Unit of the Department of Medicine at Massachusetts General Hospital, Harvard Medical School’s largest teaching hospital.  It is designed to provide pre-medical students with a year-long experience that will energize and excite them about careers in clinical investigation in biomedical research.  No previous experience is necessary although a background in basic science courses is required.

Through the mentored research component of the BMRCA, students are assigned a mentor (one of the Harvard Medical School Faculty within the Unit) and a specific research project.  Students quickly become members of the appropriate clinical research teams and are expected to present their new findings, participate in team meetings, and assist in the preparation of manuscripts.  Specific experiences will vary depending on the mentor and the chosen project and will be tailored to the students’ previous scientific and research experience.

The Biomedical Research Career Award Program is a “hands-on” exposure to biomedical research unlike any other.  It provides students with an introduction to research medicine and is a wonderful, productive, and exciting way for pre-med students to spend their time between graduation and medical school.

Research Coordinator position:  At the Center for Hereditary Retinal Degenerations, Scheie Eye Institute, Philadelphia, PA supports the research of The Center for Hereditary Retinal Degenerations. The Center includes a team of clinicians and researchers who care for patients with hereditary forms of blindness.

Pennsylvania Oncology Hematology Associates: Dr. David Henry, Princeton Class of '70, an oncologist/hematologist at Pennsylvania Hospital in Philadelphia, is looking for a senior interested in a 1-2 year experience before going out to medical school.

They are an eight-oncologist practice, heavily involved in patient research and are looking for a research assistant in their office to help in several areas. This person would be involved with clinical trials and have some patient contact. New York University Interdisciplinary Melanoma Cooperative Group is seeking a highly motivated recent college graduate with a pre-med concentration who is looking to spend 2 years gaining work experience in the medical field prior to enrolling in medical school. This person will serve as a Clinical Research Associate for the NYU Interdisciplinary Melanoma Cooperative Group (IMCG), a unique multidisciplinary translational research program which integrates both basic and clinical research components. The Clinical Research Associate will participate in the coordination of the IMCG program, which is a prospective database of clinical, pathological, and follow-up information from patients presenting to NYU with melanoma. The position will also involve scientific writing and administrative responsibilities. The Clinical Research Associate may formulate his or her own research question and serve as first author and/or co-author on other collaborative publications.

Somos Hermanos aims to reduce the disparity in health care access and quality that results when health care providers are unable to effectively communicate with Latino patients due to language and cultural barriers. The Somos Hermanos Student Immersion Program (SIP) seeks to address this problem through increasing the number of bilingual, culturally competent health care professionals.

The Student Immersion Program is a six-month language and cultural immersion program based in Quetzaltenango, Guatemala. The program combines intensive Spanish instruction, a comprehensive lecture series, socially and culturally relevant volunteer projects, weekly activities, and a trip to El Salvador and Mexico to ensure our participants gain the language capability and cultural competency desperately needed to serve marginalized, Spanish-speaking Latino populations.
