Unite For Sight is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that empowers communities worldwide to improve eye health and eliminate preventable blindness.  Unite For Sight’s volunteers range from undergraduate and medical students, educators, nurses, and public health professionals to optometrists and ophthalmologists.  Programs are available abroad in the spring, summer, winter, or fall.  Volunteers serve as interns at eye clinics, participating with the clinics' eye doctors in community-based screening programs.  The clinics' doctors diagnose and treat eye disease in the field, and surgical patients are brought to the eye clinics for surgery.  Unite For Sight funds the surgeries for those patients unable to afford eye care.  The application, as well as complete details about Unite For Sight's international opportunities, are available at http://www.uniteforsight.org/conference.  Upcoming programs are available in Ghana, India, and Thailand.

The Pasteur Foundation of New York has created a program for U.S. undergraduates to conduct 10-week summer internships at the Institut Pasteur. Their goal is to encourage students in the pursuit of a scientific career and to expose them to an international laboratory experience.

During the internships, interns will carry out research supervised by a lab mentor. Applicants should be eager to immerse in a different culture, and self-sufficient enough to arrange travel and secure housing in Paris. Depending on availability, affordable housing in a residence on campus may be possible. Interns will receive a living allowance of $400/week for a total maximum of $4,000. Travel/housing are not paid by this program, but a $300 subsidy is provided and intended to defray cost of travel and requisite insurance.

If you are interested, you will find the details here:  www.pasteurfoundation.org/zuccaire.html.  Read through and follow the instructions to apply.  Recommendation letters must be postmarked by Friday, December 14th and the deadline (materials must be in, not just postmarked) is January 4th.

Princeton in France Summer Internship:  Each summer the Princeton in France program sends two interns to work at a hospital, the Centre Medical Forcilles, which is just outside of Paris.  It is an excellent opportunity for students to get hands-on experience and to work side-by-side with doctors.  The Program is open to pre-medical Princeton students who have taken four semesters of college-level French.

One of the interns from 2004 said:  “I can say quite unequivocally that it was one of the best summers of my life.  I worked at Centre Médical de Forcilles, a 400-plus hospital outside of Paris in the small town of Férolles…they went above and beyond the call of duty to show us more and to have us participate as much as possible…this summer internship was an incredibly valuable experience, all the more so because we got to be very pro-active in shaping our own role at the hospital.  My abilities to speak and comprehend French had improved markedly by the end, and Paris is an amazing city to have gotten to know better.”

For more information or if interested in applying, please email Esther Marion, Acting Director of Princeton in France.
