Policy Description

Princeton University permits the hiring within the college community of individuals of the same family or those who have a personal relationship. However, hiring within the same department normally is prohibited for individuals of the same family or for those who have a personal relationship.
 
Exceptions to this policy should be reviewed and approved by the vice president, dean or chair and/or department.
 
Additionally, to avoid a conflict of interest or an appearance of conflict of interest (see policy  5.2.2 Nepotism and Personal Relationships in the Workplace), no employee may initiate or participate in, directly or indirectly, decisions involving a direct benefit, e.g., initial hire or rehire, promotion, salary, performance appraisals, work assignments or other working conditions to those related by blood or marriage, membership in the same household, including domestic partners, or persons with whom employees have an intimate relationship.
 
The potential for conflict of interest may also exist in close personal relationships which involve other than family relationships. The University views such conflicts of interest as seriously as it does those involving family members or blood relatives.

Procedures

All employees must complete the Annual Disclosure and Certification Form.
 
Self-disclosure can be viewed as a type of safety net, a cost-effective "insurance policy" for both the employee and the supervisor. The supervisor should review the disclosure form with the employee and confirm that no potential for conflict of interest exists.
