3.0.1 Responsibility of the Supervisor

Policy Section: Leaves of Absence

Policy Number and Title: 3.0.1 Responsibility of the Supervisor
Applicable to: All Supervisors
Effective Date: July 1, 1992

Policy Description

Princeton University recognizes the challenges many employees face today in meeting both work and family responsibilities. As an employer, the University believes that adequate and flexible leave policies assist employees in meeting these dual responsibilities and result in a more productive workforce that can give full attention to their responsibilities in the workplace.
The University also recognizes that the management of employee time off presents significant challenges to supervisors in balancing the individual employee's needs, the workload of coworkers and effective department operation. However, supervisors are encouraged to be sensitive to employee needs and to be as flexible in the administration of leave policies as the operation of the department or section will permit.
As is the case with other areas of supervision, open and frequent communication to employees regarding reasonable expectations and standards in the use of leave is important. Supervisors have the responsibility to take appropriate action if there is abuse or inappropriate use of leave policies. Both communication and review of leave policies with employees, and of the department's procedures and expectations will enable supervisors to be certain that employees understand their responsibilities and that leave policies are fairly administered.
