It is the responsibility of University supervisors to assure that federal and state laws and University policies which regulate the termination of employees are carefully observed. When a staff member's employment with the University is terminated, the supervisor must follow established procedures and document the termination so that payroll and benefits changes can be made in a timely fashion. In addition, the terminating employee's keys, library books and other University property, and identification card (except for retiring employees) must be returned to the University.

Application of This Policy

Voluntary and Involuntary Terminations
|
Terminations may be either voluntary or involuntary.
Voluntary terminations may include resignations, job abandonment (quit without notice), death while actively employed, and retirement.
Involuntary terminations may include layoff due to lack of funds, lack of work, or reorganization, discharge for unsatisfactory performance, or discharge for misconduct.
Supervisors must review involuntary terminations in advance with the Office of Human Resources before taking action.
