Bridging Cultures Dinner "Township Talk: A Study of Tsotsitaal in South Africa"

With Karolina Brook ’10 ~ South Africa recognizes eleven official languages, and is home to additional unofficial languages. Tsotsitaal is a Creole language that came about for thugs to communicate with one another without being understood by the authorities; today, the language has become the lingua franca of the townships. I will discuss characteristics of this Creole, talk about some interesting word origins and etymologies, and share my field research findings about this dynamic language.
