Extension of Stay
The Davis International Center routinely notifies departments that the J status of appointees is expiring about 2 months before the expiration date. This should give your department adequate time to process an appointment extension through the Office of the Dean of the Faculty and for the Davis IC to extend your DS-2019. If your appointment at Princeton is extended, the Davis IC can extend your J status up to the maximum time limit in your category.
Professors and Research Scholars up to 5 years
Short-term Scholars up to 6 months
Specialists up to one year
When the Davis IC receives notice of the extension of your appointment from the Office of the Dean of the Faculty and when we have required financial documentation (we must have documentation of all outside sources of support), we will extend the DS-2019 and notify you that it is ready.
If you are paid by Princeton, you will need to report to the Office of Human Resources to update your I-9 Employment Eligibility Verification Form.
You do not need a valid visa stamp to remain in the U.S. if your DS-2019 has been extended. However, the next time you leave the U.S., you will need to apply for a new J-1 visa stamp to re-enter.
