Overview for International Scholars and Employees
The host or hiring department at Princeton should be the primary point of contact for new international scholars and employees. Departments are responsible for notifying the Davis International Center (Davis IC) about upcoming appointments of incoming international scholars. All scholars appointed at Princeton must have an approved appointment through the Office of the Dean of the Faculty (DOF). Individuals appointed through the Office of Human Resources (HR) will receive immigration/visa assistance from the Davis IC for select appointments only. Visitors without appointments will not be eligible for visa sponsorship through Princeton.
The host or hiring department must arrange for an appointment through the DOF or HR with a specified rank or title, the duration of the appointment and required funding/salary.
The department is required to obtain a completed Visa Information Form from the individual and to submit that with required documentation (financial support, copies of current immigration documents if currently in the U.S.) along with copies of the Princeton appointment paperwork to the Davis IC. The Davis IC will review that while the appointment is being processed by the DOF or HR and when the appointment is approved, immigration/visa processing will begin. Depending upon the specifics of the appointment, and in consultation with the department, an appropriate visa status will be determined by the Davis IC. It is usually difficult for the Davis IC to provide anything but general immigration information to individuals until we receive the appointment paperwork and a completed Visa Information Form.
