Time Limits
A J-1 may enter the U.S. up to 30 days before the start date listed on the DS-2019 document and up to 30 days after that date. If the scholar will arrive later than 30 days past the agreed upon start date, a new DS-2019 form will need to be prepared and sent to the individual. All new J-1 exchange visitors must check in at the Davis IC within 30 days of the start date listed on the DS-2019.
A J-1 exchange visitor may hold J-1 status for the following time limits:
Professors 5 years or less
Researchers 5 years or less
Specialist 1 year or less
Short-term Scholar 6 months or less
