Staging Citizenship: Race and the Queer History of Naturalization in the United States

Siobhan Somerville, Associate Professor in the Department of English and the Gender & Women’s Studies Program at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign. Somerville has written extensively on the intersection of race and sexuality in U.S. literature and history, and her current book project is entitled A Queer Genealogy of Naturalization in the U.S.

Andrew Sullivan: Politics of Homosexuality

Former editor of the New Republic, Andrew Sullivan, was one of the first journalists to begin blogging in 2001. He is Internationally known as a provocative political and social commentator. In his latest book, The Conservative Soul: How We Lost It, How to Get It Back, Sullivan challenges the tenants of contemporary conservatism. Sullivan is a self-identified conservative, gay, Roman Catholic, and he will be speaking on the politics of homosexuality as part of the Public Lecture Series.

Historicizing Erotohistoriography

What models do we have for recording history in which erotics, bodies, and desires occupy a valuable place?  Given recent assertions that “queer” opposes the politically programmatic, even the future itself, what about the past?  Is there a historical consciousness with eroticism at the center? This talk will explore some historically specific models of “doing” what I call erotohistoriography, aiming for a discussion about the relationship between sexual pleasure and encounters with the past.

Faculty & Staff Ally Project

This annual workshop covers a wide range of topics including language, support services, and resources. Designed specifically for staff and faculty, the Ally Project is intended to teach ways to better support lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) students and colleagues.
2 p.m.: Transgender 101 - Understanding the Trans Experience
Over the past ten years, there has been an increase in the number of students and employees at Princeton who identify as transgender or genderqueer. However, there is still a lot of misunderstanding and misinformation about the transgender and gender variant experience. This program is open to all members of the Princeton University community and will focus on ways to be a ally to trans and gender variant students, staff, and faculty. The session will also discuss the use of language, what it means to identify as transgender or gender non-conforming, the experience of transgender students and employees, and resources you can utilize as an ally.
