Film Screening of Dreams Deferred: The Sakia Gunn Film Project
Rocky Theater
In 2003, Sakia Gunn was murdered as a result of homophobic violence in Newark, NJ, and the media barely noticed. This documentary tells a story of homophobia, racism, and gender bias as a community struggles to make sense of such a senseless murder. Please note: A follow-up discussion will be held on Wednesday regarding the screening of this film.

Cellist Zachary Sweet will be presenting his story of abstinence through music. Trained at the Eastman School of Music, Zachary will be performing excerpts from the Bach Suites for Unaccompanied Cello while discussing his journey through sex, promiscuity, abstinence, love, and now marriage.

Famed fashion designer and former Project Runway contestant Rami Kashou will present an afternoon talk about his life. He will discuss being a Palestinian in Israel, his immigration to the U.S., his successful career in fashion, and negotiating his sexuality through it all.

Forbes Black Box Theater
Miller is an internationally acclaimed performance artist whose work as a performer and writer explores his artistic, spiritual and political identity as a gay man. He will offer an abbreviated version of his highly praised performance, which focuses on same-sex marriage, the struggle for immigration rights, for lesbian and gay bi-national couples, and his personal story of trying to keep his Australian partner in the United States.

La Lupe Queen of Latin Soul

This newly released film is about the life of Cuban-born pop singer, rebel, and innovator Lupe Yoli, also known as La Lupe or La Yiyiyi. She was renowned for her emotional performance style and became a gay icon. There will be a discussion with the director following the screening.

Who Is the Macho Who Wants to Kill Me? Gender, (Homo)sexuality, and Revolutionary Masculinity in Brazil under the Dictatorship

James N. Green is Associate Professor of Latin American History at Brown University, past President of the Brazilian Studies Association, and the President of the New England Council on Latin American Studies. He is the author of the prize-winning book, Beyond Carnival: Male Homosexuality in Twentieth-Century Brazil (1999). He will be discussing his current work on a social and cultural history of the revolutionary left during the Brazilian military regime.

Queer Articulations, Princeton’s independent film and video festival, consists of a wide variety of works, including experimental shorts, narrative features, and documentaries. Our goal is to bring LGBT films to our campus community and represent a myriad of voices through the cinematic experience.

Staceyann Chin, a favorite at NYC’s famous Nuyorican Poets Café, has won numerous poetry slam contests and has been recognized for her performances around the globe. She appeared on Russell Simmons Presents Def Poetry Jam on HBO and was an original cast member in its Tony Award-winning production on Broadway. She has also published a number of poetry books speaking about her life as an openly gay, Chinese-Jamaican, NYC artist and activist.

National LGBT Leaders Roundtable

Following the New Jersey Symposium on LGBT Rights, a roundtable discussion will be held with the leaders of state, regional, and national organizations dedicated to advancing the rights of LGBT persons. Issues to be discussed include: gay marriage, ‘Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell,’ a trans-inclusive ENDA, and what lies ahead in the coming months and years. This program is not to be missed!
