Princeton University welcomes music historian Timothy Lawrence who will be presenting his latest book, a biography of queer music legend Arthur Russell. Russell, until recently an under-recognized force in the downtown New York music scene, moved across genres and social spaces, to produce an eclectic collection of songs that were far beyond his time. Spanning from disco to country to experimental ambient tracks, Russell’s sound has been highly influential to some of the greatest musicians working over the past few decades and continues to inspire future generations through its brilliant compositions. Director, Matt Wolf, will also screen his critically acclaimed documentary, Wild Combination: A Portrait of Arthur Russell, which the New York Times calls “a tender, fascinating documentary” that “will delight the Russell cult and instantly convert new members.” Wolf will be present for a Q and A immediately following the film.

A Book Talk with Amin Ghaziani, LGBT - Cotsen Postdoctoral Fellow
Thursday, October 22, Noon – 1:30 p.m.
Women’s Center/International Center Conference Room (Frist 243)
Marching on Washington is a hallowed tradition of American political protest, and demonstrations led by the women’s rights, civil rights, and antiwar movements all endure in popular memory. Between 1979 and 2000, four major lesbian and gay demonstrations took place there, and while these marches were some of the largest of their time, they have been sorely overlooked—until now. Drawing on extensive archival research, historical data, original photographs, interviews with key activists, and more than a thousand news articles, Ghaziani offers a descriptive, historical, political, cultural, and sociological analysis of these marches, their surrounding context, their organization, and in particular, the role of infighting in defining what it means to be a sexual minority in the United States.

With her refreshingly down-to-earth style and sharp wit, Taormino argues that we must question the fairy tales and challenge the myths we've been taught about love, sex, intimacy, and commitment- only then can we create relationships that are honest, fulfilling, and really work.

Lunch Talk with Tristan Taormino

Society bombards us all with mixed messages about sex that are often confusing and contradictory. LGBTQ people are especially vulnerable to stereotypes and negative representations of our sexuality.
