  Afghanistan

LISD’s project on Afghanistan began two months after 9/11 with an off-the-record meeting with Afghan leaders on the future of their country. This launched a multi-disciplinary project that focused on exploring structures and processes for forming a viable and democratic state while also increasing the prerequisite security within Afghanistan and its region. With support from a grant from the Carnegie Corporation of New York, LISD’s Afghanistan project addressed the parallel challenges of building a stable Afghan state while simultaneously enhancing security in the country and the region. Through a series of international conferences, it brought together international academics, experts, government officials, and field practitioners to examine international and local best practices relevant for state and security building in Afghanistan.

Project objectives included: proposing viable and participatory solutions for building Afghanistan's state structure and security arrangements; building on international experiences as well as on local tradition and viability; developing economic and related models on a regional level; and examining potential lessons pertaining to other cases of state building.
