Faculty Position for Fall 2009
Franklin W. Olin College of Engineering invites applications for a regular faculty appointment of open rank for Fall 2009. We are seeking candidates dedicated to undergraduate engineering education and research who have a demonstrated record of excellence in disciplines related to mechanical engineering. Candidates should have expertise in environmentally sustainable energy systems, e.g., renewable energy, energy conversion, systems design, novel materials, alternative fuels, power generation and transmission, environmental impact, or energy policy. However, outstanding candidates in other areas will also be considered. Those with significant industrial or entrepreneurial experience are encouraged to apply.
In addition to exemplary teaching in mechanical engineering, the successful candidate should have the flexibility to teach courses spanning the college’s project-oriented engineering curriculum. Candidates should be able to supervise undergraduate research. Commitment to innovation, research, and intellectual vitality through scholarly and other creative endeavors is essential.
Franklin W. Olin College of Engineering is a new institution that strives to provide an exceptional and innovative engineering education. Our student body consists of approximately 300 accomplished students whose interests in science and engineering are balanced by their interests in entrepreneurship, humanities and the arts. Assistant/Associate Professor in Aerospace/Fluid-Thermal Area

I am an alumnus of the Princeton MAE Dept., now working at The Aerospace Corporation in Los Angeles. Qualifications for this position include a Ph.D. in the physical sciences or related engineering field, at least three years of laboratory experience and a demonstrated capability for conducting successful research programs. An ability to travel and participate in contractor reviews and test operations is important, as are a willingness to learn and flexibility with respect to task assignment. Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to effectively communicate with government customers, management and co-workers both orally and in writing are a requirement. The ability to work in a project team environment, work concurrently on multiple projects and willingness to share laboratory space equipment is required. The successful candidate must be willing and able to address national security space problems in the areas of solid and liquid rocket motor combustion, detonations associated with materials in liquid oxygen and similar issues while also conducting a research program. Expertise in both shock wave and combustion areas, including chemical kinetics and detonations, is highly desired. The successful candidate should be capable of contributing to both experimental and theorectical aspects of shock waves, high temperature kinetics and propulsion technology. As part of the Propulsion Science Department, knowledge or experience in spacecraft chemical/electric propulsion systems, experimental thruster testing, experimental diagnostics and/or propellant chemistry is also desirable. Experience/expertise in laser diagnostics is highly desirable.
