The Engineering Council has selected the winners of the biannual Excellence in Teaching Awards, which are given to outstanding faculty and staff members as well as teaching assistants who teach engineering students. The awards are given each semester, and there is no quota for the number given. Students nominate teachers, and the final winners are chosen by the E-Council Awards Committee, which is run by student volunteers. After each semester, the E-Council Awards Committee e-mails every engineering student asking for nominations. After receiving nominations, the E-Council e-mails another survey to the students of each nominee to find out more about the professor or teaching assistant. Using this input, the committee makes the final decision. In selecting the winners, the committee focuses on whether or not the teacher clearly explained the material, understood student needs, and was available and motivating.
