Phil Schaap, visiting lecturer in the American Studies Program, was one of the winners at last night's 43rd annual Grammy Award ceremonies in Los Angeles. Schaap was honored for his work as producer of "Louis Armstrong: The Complete Hot Five and Hot Seven Recordings" (Columbia/Legacy Recordings), which was named best historical album of the year.
Schaap, who has taught in the American Studies Program annually since 1994, gave a course last semester that concentrated on Louis Armstrong's life and art. A well-known jazz expert, radio commentator, and teacher, Schaap also appeared prominently in Ken Burns' recent PBS documentary, "Jazz." He will return to Princeton next fall as a Visiting Lecturer.
