McCarter Theatre and University hold topping-off ceremony for new theater
Posted May 7, 2002; 01:18 p.m.
The Berlind Theatre will include a 350 seat proscenium theater, two rehearsal halls, classrooms, offices and other support areas. The facility will function as a second stage for McCarter Theatre and as the principal performance venue for the University's Program in Theater and Dance .
McCarter and the University are jointly raising funds for the project; overseeing the design, planning and construction of the building; and will schedule the activities in the new theater, which will be shared equally. Major support comes from theater producer and 1954 Princeton alumnus Roger S. Berlind, for whom the building will be named. Groundbreaking was held in September.
The architect is Hugh Hardy '54, founder and partner of Hardy Holzman Pfeiffer Associates, a planning, architectural and interior design firm with offices in New York and Los Angeles. Hardy specializes in complex building types, primarily for public use, including the renovations of the New Victory Theater, the Joyce Theater, the New Amsterdam Theater and the Cooper-Hewitt Museum. The Berlind Theatre represents Hardy's first architectural project on the Princeton campus.
