'Environmentally Preferable Purchasing' to be discussed, March 8

The Nature and Culture discussion group will hold a presentation and discussion on environmentally preferable purchasing at noon Friday, March 8, in Frist 212.

The guest speaker will be Kevin Lyons, head of purchasing at Rutgers University and author of "Buying for the Future: Contract Management and Environmental Challenge," which was awarded the National Conservation Award from the National Wildlife Federation.

Lyons will discuss the challenges and benefits of designing and issuing purchasing contracts which integrate and promote sustainable economic development concepts. He will use as examples his environmental contract design and implementation work at Rutgers, the World Wildlife Federation-UK and Colombia.

Lyons also will talk about his doctoral dissertation, which examined U.S. Federal Executive Order 13101, "Greening the Government Through Waste Prevention, Recycling and Federal Acquisition," and the development of a U.S. higher education best practice model. His research has led to the development of a Web-based environmentally preferable purchasing waste/life cycling tracking and reporting system.
