Symposium planned on symmetry in physics, May 6

Scholars of the philosophy of physics will speak on Monday, May 6, as part of a one-day symposium titled "Understanding Symmetry in Physics."
The symposium , which will feature four talks by faculty members from New York University and the University of Oxford, will take place in 302 Frist Campus Center from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. The Princeton philosophy department and the Oxford philosophy faculty are sponsoring the event as part of the Princeton-Oxford Partnership.
Simon Saunders, university lecturer in philosophy of science at Oxford, will speak at 10 a.m. on "Symmetry and Identity in Physics."
Jeremy Butterfield, a senior research fellow at Oxford, will speak at 11:30 a.m. on "Problems and Symmetries: Some Philosophical Morals of Analytical Mechanics."
Gordon Belot, associate professor of philosophy at NYU, will talk at 2 p.m. about "Gvdel on Dust, Time and Symmetry."
Harvey Brown, a reader in philosophy and university lecturer in philosophy of physics at Oxford, will speak at 3:30 p.m. on "Aspects of the Role of Symmetry in Principles of Physics."
The talks will be followed by a reception at 5 p.m.
