The Princeton University Ensemble X, part of the University's jazz program, has been named one of the winners of Down Beat magazine's award for outstanding performance by a jazz instrumental group at a college, university or conservatory.
Ensemble X is a jazz collective conducted by Anthony Branker and influenced by the sounds of world music, African-American sacred and secular music, modality and the jazz avant-garde. It shared the Down Beat award with ensembles from the Eastman School of Music, Berklee College of Music, University of Miami and University of Northern Colorado.
The award, to be published in Down Beat's June issue, is part of the international jazz publication's annual student music awards competition. It is the second time Princeton's jazz program has been honored by Down Beat, which in 1999 named the University's Monk/Mingus Ensemble as the nation's best jazz instrumental group.
