Cava chosen for Carty Award

The National Academy of Sciences has selected Princeton professor of chemistry Robert Cava to receive the 2005 John Carty Award for the Advancement of Science.

The award, which includes a medal and a prize of $25,000, is given annually for distinguished accomplishment in any field of science and was given this year in the area of materials science. The academy cited Cava "for his outstanding contributions in the synthesis and characterization of many new materials that display interesting and important superconducting, dielectric, magnetic or thermal properties."

The award will be presented at a ceremony May 2 in Washington, D.C., at the annual meeting of the National Academy of Sciences.

Cava, who earned his Ph.D. at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, came to Princeton in 1996 after 17 years at Bell Laboratories and is currently chair of the Department of Chemistry. He also is a member of the Princeton Institute for the Science and Technology of Materials.
