Day focused on eliminating racism, April 29
Posted April 25, 2005; 05:13 p.m.
The University will join with the YWCAs of Princeton and Trenton to
observe the National Day of Commitment to Eliminate Racism from 9 a.m.
to noon Friday, April 29, at the Fields Center for Equality and
Cultural Understanding.
Activities will include breakfast at 9 a.m. followed by: a poetry
reading by Cecelia B. Hodges, well-known professor, actor, producer and
writer; a presentation of awards to Trenton High School essay contest
winners; musical selections from Trenton children's singing groups; a
panel discussion on "Civil Rights-Civil Transformation: What Can We
Do?"; and an official signing of the Birmingham Pledge by those who
feel strongly about the negative impact of racism and want to make a
difference.
The National Day of Commitment to Eliminate Racism was organized in
1992 as a response to the Rodney King beating and trial; today, more
than 10 years after the YWCA first recognized this day, local chapters
are continuing to dialogue about issues dealing with race.
The event is co-sponsored at Princeton by the Fields Center, the Pace Center and the Women's Center.
