Comedian Chevy Chase has been selected to deliver the keynote address at Princeton's Class Day ceremony on Monday, May 30.
Chase was selected by leaders of the senior class from among nominees suggested by classmates. In an e-mail to seniors, class leaders wrote: "We watched Mr. Chase throughout our formative years, with his movies becoming part of our collective memory and shared sense of humor. Chase's work has wide appeal, touching many across generations. He has also demonstrated an interest in being a part of Princeton, supporting performing arts on campus, especially our a cappella groups. We are very honored to have him speak at our Class Day ceremony, as he is not only a talented actor and comedian, but also a man who shared our love for this University."
Chase is one of the founding members of television's "Saturday Night Live." He worked behind the scenes as a writer and in front of the camera as the "Weekend Update" anchor, earning Emmy awards in both writing and acting for his efforts. After SNL he moved to Hollywood, where he starred in classics such as "Caddyshack," the "National Lampoon's Vacation" series, the "Fletch" series and "Three Amigos." He is known for his trademark deadpan comedy style and his commitment to family movies.
A graduate of Bard College, he was valedictorian of his high school class. He is also a talented musician -- Chase played in a band in college with Walter Becker and Donald Fagen, who went on to form Steely Dan.
Class Day, which takes place on the day before Princeton's Commencement, is organized by members of the graduating class. In addition to Chase's address, the ceremony will include remarks by class members, the induction of honorary class members and the recognition of class members for their contributions.
The Class Day ceremony will be held on Cannon Green, weather permitting, at 10:30 a.m. It is a ticketed event for seniors and their invited guests, with limited standing room and unticketed simulcast sites available in McCosh 10 and 50 unless severe weather forces the ceremony inside.
