Filmmaker to discuss his work, May 19
Posted May 10, 2005; 06:10 p.m.
Independent film producer and director Lisandro Perez-Rey will show
and talk about his work at 4:30 p.m. Thursday, May 19, in the Friend
Center Auditorium.
His first feature-length film, "Mas alla del Mar" (Beyond the Sea),
will be screened and followed by a discussion. The 2003 film focuses on
the Mariel Boatlift of 1980, when some 130,000 Cubans left their
homeland for the United States. It is considered one of the most
dramatic episodes in the history of human migration.
Perez-Rey has completed several short films and documentaries, many of
which deal with Cuban-Americans in Miami. He is this year's recipient
of the prestigious Oscar B. Cintas Foundation Fellowship for artists of
Cuban descent. He currently is finishing his next documentary, "La
Fabrica" (The Factory), which follows a group of Cuban rappers from
their homes in Havana through their groundbreaking concert tour of the
United States.
The lecture is sponsored by the Center for Migration and Development.
