Struggle between theocracies, democracies is topic, Oct. 4

Rémi Brague, a professor of philosophy at the Sorbonne in Paris, will address the struggle between theocracies and democracies in a lecture scheduled for 8 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 4, in 4 Friend Center.

The lecture, titled "Theocracy, Conscience and the Rule of Law," is sponsored by the James Madison Program in American Ideals and Institutions.

Brague is co-director of the Center for Research in the Tradition of Classical Thought at the Sorbonne and professor of medieval Arabic philosophy at the Ludwig-Maximilian University of Munich. He has taught at Boston University and the University of Lausanne and been a research fellow at the University of Cologne. His books include "Eccentric Culture: A Theory of Western Civilization," "The Wisdom of the World: The Human Experience of the Universe in Western Thought" and the forthcoming "Divine Law."
