Manet masterpiece to be discussed, Oct. 20

A discussion centered on one of the treasures of the Princeton University Art Museum, Edouard Manet's "Gypsy with a Cigarette," is set for 4:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 20, in 101 McCormick Hall.
Members of the community will be able to view the painting and
participate in an interdisciplinary discussion moderated by professor
Anthony Grafton, historian and chair of the Council of the Humanities. Five experts from different fields will comment briefly on the painting and then lead a conversation.
Speakers will be: Carol Armstrong, an art historian and Manet
specialist; John Borneman, an anthropologist; Alexander Nehamas, a
expert on aesthetics from the philosophy and comparative literature
departments; Deborah Nord, a literature scholar in the English
department, who is writing about gypsies; and Betsy Rosasco, art museum
curator of later Western art.
"Gypsy with a Cigarette" (ca. 1862) was a bequest from Archibald
Alexander, a member of the class of 1928. Last April, a reproduction of
the painting was sent to each admitted student as part of the admission
packet.
The event is co-sponsored by the humanities council and the art museum. A reception will follow in the museum.
