'NAFTA and Beyond' conference is Dec. 2-3

A conference on "NAFTA and Beyond: Alternative Disciplinary
Perspectives in the Study of Global Trade and Development" is scheduled
for Friday and Saturday, Dec. 2-3, on campus.
The event, sponsored by the University's Center for Migration and Development,
will draw top-level economists, sociologists and anthropologists to
exchange ideas about vital matters of shared concern regarding the
North American Free Trade Agreement and related issues. It will feature
16 invited speakers and seven members of the Princeton faculty
discussing topics including global institutions, social movements,
transnational migration, poverty and development, and the effects of
the global economy on communities and the environment.
The conference will begin at 9 a.m. Friday in the Friend Center
auditorium with a plenary session titled "Can Globalization Be Free?
Assessing Development in the New Millennium" with four distinguished
speakers: Dani Rodrik of Harvard University; Fred Block of the
University of California-Davis; Saskia Sassen of the University of
Chicago and the London School of Economics; and Barbara Stallings of
Brown University.
That will be followed by five other panels held in the course of the
two days. Sessions will run until 4 p.m. Friday in the Friend Center,
and from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Saturday in 300 Wallace Hall.
The conference, which is open to the public, is co-sponsored by the
Program in Latin American Studies, Institute for International and
Regional Studies and 14 other University organizations. For more
