Space traveler to discuss recent trip, Feb. 14

Gregory Olsen, who in October 2005 became the third self-financed space traveler to visit the International Space Station, will speak about his experiences at 3 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 14, in Peyton Hall Auditorium.

The presentation will detail Olsen’s training and his 10-day, $20 million journey with the Russian Space Agency, and will include video footage from the flight.

Olsen holds degrees in electrical engineering and physics from Fairleigh Dickinson University as well as a doctorate in materials science from the University of Virginia. He has worked as a research scientist for RCA Laboratories, where he was awarded 10 patents. In 1991, he started Sensors Unlimited Inc., a manufacturing and research company that specializes in advanced imaging applications and that has been an industrial affiliate of the Princeton Institute for the Science and Technology of Materials. His accolades include the 2000 Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers' Aron Kressel Award, which recognizes individuals who have made important contributions to opto-electronic device technology.

The event is sponsored by the Princeton Astrobiology Club.

Hisashi Kobayashi, whose steady leadership as dean guided Princeton's School of Engineering and Applied Science through a rapid expansion of programs and facilities in the late 1980s and early 1990s, died on March 9. He was 84.

Each year, the campus hosts the Celebrate Princeton Innovation reception to honor University inventors and their research teams, and to bring campus researchers together with the external community of entrepreneurs, investors, industry partners, business organizations and others who participate in the innovation ecosystem in New Jersey.

At the Celebrate Princeton Invention reception Nov. 29, the University honored its faculty, staff and student inventors for their role in technology transfer — which includes patenting and licensing of inventions — to bring research innovations to the marketplace.
