Doha Declaration is subject of talk, Feb. 13

A lecture titled "The Doha Declaration: The World Affirms the Natural Family and Marriage" is set for 4:30 p.m. Monday, Feb. 13, in 104 Computer Science Building.

William Saunders Jr., senior fellow and human rights counsel at the Family Research Council in Washington, D.C., will speak.

The Doha Declaration was issued by the Doha International Conference for the Family held in November 2004 in Doha, Qatar, in celebration of the 10th anniversary of the International Year of the Family. In December 2004, the United Nations General Assembly ratified the declaration, which was co-sponsored by 149 nations.

The document restates and reaffirms commitments of the international community to support and promote the natural family and marriage. Critics have said that the document aligns too closely with conservative viewpoints.

The Feb. 13 talk will examine the process leading up to the adoption of the declaration and document's implications for international and U.S. domestic law. It is presented by the James Madison Program in American Ideals and Institutions in the Department of Politics as part of the "America's Founding and Future" series.
