Former FDA official discusses women's health, Feb. 21
Posted February 16, 2006; 10:41 p.m.
Susan Wood, formerly the U.S. Food and Drug Administration's top
official on women's health issues, will speak on "Women's Health,
Emergency Contraception and the FDA" at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 21, in
16 Robertson Hall.
Wood served as the FDA's assistant commissioner for women's health and
director of the agency's Office of Women's Health from 2000 to 2005.
She resigned in protest of the agency's decision to delay a final
ruling on whether the "morning-after pill" contraceptive should be made
more easily accessible.
Before joining the FDA, Wood was the director for policy and program
development at the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services' Office
on Women's Health, where she focused on issues in the areas of
international health, reproductive health, legislation and health care
policy.
From 1990 to 1995, Wood worked for the Congressional Caucus for Women's
Issues, an organization of members of Congress dedicated to advancing
legislation promoting legal, economic and health equity for women.
Prior to that, Wood was a research scientist at the Johns Hopkins
University School of Medicine.
The lecture is sponsored by the Woodrow Wilson School of Public and International Affairs, the Office of Population Research and the Gender and Policy Network.
